Barbara J. Shoff, local author and genetic genealogist, will present a workshop called GEDmatch: Beyond the Basics (Part One). To better accommodate people’s schedules, the workshop will be repeated four times and will be held in the Library’s meeting room C (near the Reference desk).

Tuesday, September 5

2:30 pm to 4:30 pm

6:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Wednesday, September 6

2:30 pm to 4:30 pm

6:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Shoff will be covering the exciting tools at the GEDmatch website which have been designed by genealogists for genealogists. This hands on training is to help you feel comfortable using various tools to reveal information about your origins (including Native American DNA), how to do automated GEDCOM comparisons, and how to compare your DNA matches from different testing companies.

These workshops are free and open to the public. Each workshop will be limited to 20 people, so registration is required. Please contact the Local and Family History Department at 918-338-4167 or email Sherry at  to schedule the class slot that works best for you.

If you have not taken your DNA test, you are still welcome to attend the class.

You will need to bring your fully charged laptop (a power cord is advised as a backup along with a flash drive). Also, you will need to bring your DNA testing company password and your kit number.

Prior to this workshop, you will need to sign up at GEDmatch on their website (signing up is free) and have your raw DNA data from your testing company uploaded to GEDmatch. This YouTube video called GEDmatch Basics shows you how to do this:

(Instructions for uploading DNA data from different testing companies will start at the seven minute mark.)
