The 2019 Summer Reading Program, which is funded by the Bartlesville Friends of the Library, is open to young people, preschool through young adult, with programs, prize drawings, storytimes, and special events both at the library and around the community. Register beginning May 4th at the Youth Services desk at the Library! You can also register at our Sunfest booth and other community events! CHILDREN’S SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
June 4th, 1:00 – Comets & Crafts…Abigail Bollenbach, member of the Bartlesville Astronomical Society and future astrophysicist, will tell kids all about comets and then lead them in creating a comet necklace and a space headband!
June 10th, 2:00 – Fran Stallings, Shine On! Tales of the Sun, Moon, & Stars…Why do the Sun and Moon live in the sky? How do they share ruling day and night? Where did the Stars come from and what do their pictures mean? Fran Stallings’ program combines hands-on science demonstrations with memorable tales our ancestors told, inviting us to pay attention to our heavenly neighbors. Fun and Fascinating!
June 18th, 2:00 – Inspyral…This glowing, anti-gravity juggling show is out of this world! Kelsey & Jeremy Philo perform their jaw-dropping glow show with lasers, hula hoops, acrobatics and unicycle to illustrate their positive message of grit and growth mindset.
June 26th, 2:00 – Kevin Wade’s “Reach for the Stars” Magic Show…Summer readers will be sitting on the edge of their seats as we take a magical journey that is OUT OF THIS WORLD! At the end of the show they will “take-off” to the front desk to check out books about space exploration, magic and more. A free Gravity-Powered Reflex Tester and Magic Trick will be provided for each child in attendance!
July 3rd, 2:00 – Mad Science of Central Oklahoma…Launch into high flying adventure this summer with Mad Science’s “Destination: Moon!” Our show ignites imagination, fun and learning as we experience space vacuums, principles of flight and even astronaut training!
July 12th, 10:00 – Airplane & Rocket Launch…Participants will create paper airplanes and straw rockets, with the help of detailed instructions and patterns, before launching them off of the library’s 2nd-story walkway!
July 16, 10:00 – Space STEM Projects…BPL will roll out the Stem & Maker Carts, full of materials for participants to use in making Galaxy Jars, Gravity Art, and Sunray Catcher Bracelets. There will also be a special challenge to build a spaceship prototype and see which design flies the highest!
July 26th, 6:30 – Frontier Pool Party…Celebrate the achievement of your summer reading goals at our free, grand finale pool party!
TEEN SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
June 6th, 6:00 – “Starry Night” Paint and Pour…Artist Karen Smith Woods Tucker will be leading a second painting class just for teens! Space is limited…registration begins May 1st.
June 14th, 2:00 – “Mission to Saturn!”…Abigail Bollenbach, member of the Bartlesville Astronomical Society and future astrophysicist, will tell the story of the Cassini Huygens Mission, a collaboration between NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Italian Space Agency to send a probe to study the planet Saturn and its system, including its rings and natural satellites. Ms. Bollenbach has put together a wonderful, inspiring presentation that includes photos and video. June 20th, 4:00 – Sci-Fi Trivia…Paper Games, our local comic and tabletop game shop, will be hosting a Sci-Fi Trivia Event at the Bartlesville Public Library! From Princess Leia to Black Holes, we will be shooting for the stars with this Sci-Fi themed trivia event! Teams of 3-6 will compete for prizes, bragging rights and gift certificates! Groups are highly encouraged to help your chances. **BONUS POINTS FOR BEING IN THEMED COSTUME! **(For real, if you come in your best SCI-FI cosplay, your team will get 2 bonus points per member that dressed up!)
June 25th, 6:00 – Mystery Science Theater 3000!…At this special screening of an episode of MST3K, enjoy the antics of Jonah and his robot buddies as they riff on a “so bad it’s good” Sci-Fi “B” movie. You’ll be encouraged to join in with the funny comments! (If you don’t know what MST3K is, Google it!)
July 1, 6:00 – Teen Maker Night…Create Eclipse Bleached T-shirts (bring your own dark colored t-shirt), Nebulas in a Bottle, Cubeecraft Sci-Fi Characters, and Cosmic Bath Bombs
July 12th, 2:00 – Sci-Fi Dioramas…Create a shoebox diorama based on your favorite Sci-Fi book, movie, or character! Supplies will be provided but you’re also welcome to bring your own.
July 18th, 4:00 – Sci-Fi board game demo…Paper Games will be hosting a Sci-Fi Game Day for teens at the Bartlesville Public Library! They will will be teaching and playing the following games: -Eminent Domain-Forbidden Sky-Star Realms…Join us and learn some new sci-fi themed games!
